2026 Scholarship — submissions accepted through May 1, 2026
Intro / Purpose
The Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association (JAHSA) supports improvements in health and safety throughout the mining sector by providing financial assistance to students preparing for careers in mine safety and health. This scholarship program is intended to encourage the next generation of mine safety professionals by helping cover education-related expenses for students studying mining safety, health, or related fields.
Who may apply (Eligibility and Categories)
Applicants must be enrolled at an accredited U.S. college or university and pursuing studies related to mining or mining safety/health. Awards are offered to candidates in the following groups:
- High school seniors who will be entering a college or university degree program.
- Current undergraduate students enrolled in a college or university degree program.
- College/university graduates who are pursuing a graduate-level degree.
Required application materials
Applicants must complete the Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association Scholarship Application and submit the original, printed packet by the deadline. The application package must include:
- Official transcripts covering the last three years of completed education.
- A financial disclosure.
- A short essay of 200–300 words.
- A list of extracurricular activities.
Submission instructions and deadline
The original, completed application must be printed and mailed so it is received on or before May 1, 2026. Applications submitted after May 1, 2026 will not be considered. The application form is fillable on a computer for convenience, but you must print the finished form and mail the physical packet.
Selection process and notification
A review committee evaluates submissions and selects recipients based on academic performance, demonstrated financial need, Grade Point Average (GPA), leadership, and commitment to a mining-related career. The committee reaches consensus on recipients; successful applicants will be notified by August 1, 2026. (Awarding scholarship recipients will also be notified by mail no later than July 15, 2026.) All applicants will be considered without regard to race, color, sex, age, national origin, religion, or disability.
Award details
Award amounts vary according to available funds and the merits of each application. Funds will be available for the fall semester of 2026 and will be paid directly to the recipient’s college or university. Payments will be credited to the student’s account and may be applied only to tuition and books.
Application checklist (use before mailing)
1. Complete every page of the application—enter “N/A” where an item does not apply.
2. Include official transcripts for the last three years of completed education.
3. Attach a 200–300 word essay (typed, double-spaced, 12-point font) explaining how you plan to apply your education to benefit the mining industry.
4. Provide at least two letters of recommendation.
5. Do not fold, staple, or paper-clip the application or supporting documents.
6. Print single-sided only (no double-sided copies).
7. Do not include additional documents beyond those requested.
8. Label attachments as Attachment A, Attachment B, etc.
9. Make and retain a complete copy of your application for your records.
10. Mail the original application in an 8 x 12 manila envelope (or larger).
