Barry 'Spook' Stang Memorial Scholarship
Scholarship Sponsored by Montana Trucking Association Education Foundation
Introduction
This year the Barry “Spook” Stang Memorial Scholarship Committee will select recipients for scholarships intended for students entering a four‑year Montana college, university, trade school, or other accredited educational program. Children of individuals working in our industry are especially encouraged to apply. Academic performance is considered in the selection process but is not the sole determining factor. Individual award amounts will be set by the Scholarship Trustees at the time winners are chosen.
Purpose
The Barry “Spook” Stang Memorial Scholarship exists to help cover tuition, books, and required fees for as many qualifying employees — or their dependents — of Montana Trucking Association (MTA) member companies, and of the MTA itself, as possible.
Eligibility and Application Requirements
Applicants must meet all of the following conditions:
1. Admission and Enrollment
- Have received written acceptance to, and be enrolled in, a Montana college, university, trade school, or other educational institution the applicant plans to attend.
2. Relationship to MTA
- Be either an employee or a dependent of an employee of an MTA Member company or of the Montana Trucking Association.
- The employee (or the parent/guardian who is the employee, where applicable) must have been employed by the Member company or by MTA for at least six months before submitting the scholarship application.
- A written statement from the employee’s supervisor confirming the employee’s status as a regular full‑time employee must be included with the application.
3. Academic Standards
- Hold a cumulative grade point average (high school or college/university) of at least 2.50 at the time of application.
- Students must be enrolled for at least the minimum credit load required by their chosen institution to be classified as full‑time students.
4. Continued Eligibility and Disbursement Conditions
- A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.50 must be maintained while receiving scholarship funding. Before any second disbursement for an academic year, the Scholarship Committee will require verification from the institution’s registrar that the student achieved the required GPA for the previous term and is registered full‑time for the upcoming term. The committee will also contact the registrar to confirm full‑time registration before releasing initial scholarship funds.
Note: The Scholarship Trustees determine the number and value of awards at selection time.
